Origin, Geographical Presence and Seasonal Availability

E.K. Davall brought his newly created Empress variety to California in the early 20th century.  Empress date was developed from a seedling of the much tougher and drier Thoory date, and immediately became Davall’s favourite.

Around 1916, E. K. Davall had it planted on his land in the vicinity of Cathedral City, California. Davall sold his land and the original plantings. But he had already begun a new garden nearby, where he transplanted his prized seedling palms, among them was Empress.

He had planted it in his 15-acre garden outside Cathedral City, California, along with another 50 valued date palms by 1955.

In the United States, cultivated date types like the Empress date are often spread through cuttings. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) despatched agricultural explorers overseas in the early twentieth century to bring back unusual food crops for domestic cultivation.

They started bringing cuttings of date palms from North Africa and the Middle East to the arid regions of California’s Coachella Valley, which turned out to be perfect for growing dates. The Middle East was widely represented in early 20th-century American popular culture.

Californian farmers owe a lot to their Middle Eastern counterparts for inspiring the development of the Empress date, a legacy of a time when the Coachella Valley turned east for inspiration. And now, these dates are grown in several countries, including California, Arizona, and Mexico.
